Office 2019 is not version 17.0?

As you can see, since Outlook 2016 the version number is stuck at 16.0 and Office 2019 didn’t become version 17.0. This is because Office 2016 and Office 2019 now use the same code-base as Office 365 and your license determines which features are enabled.

At the same time, this change also increases (or to be more technically correct; doesn’t decrease) compatibility with add-ins and external applications which explicitly look at the version number.

Background info

Outlook was first introduced in Office 97 which had the version number 8.0. The version numbering of Office itself skips number 5 and 6. This is because since Office 95 (version 7.0), all Office applications started sharing the same version number. Word at the time was in its 6.0 version and with that it had the highest version number. Its next version for Office 95 would become version Word 7.0 so that version number was taken for the entire Office 95 suite.

Outlook 97 replaced the applications Schedule+ and Exchange Client which were previously bundled with respectively Office and Exchange Server.

Before Outlook 97 there were already clients called Outlook bundled with Exchange. Their names are; Outlook for MS-DOS, Outlook for Windows 3.x, and Outlook for Macintosh. After “Microsoft Outlook 2001 for Macintosh” came Entourage which offered Exchange connectivity for Mac users. All these versions have their own version numbers which have nothing to to with the current versioning scheme.

Outlook 98 was initially a free download and later remained as a free upgrade for Outlook 97 users adding new features – most notably support for non-Exchange accounts. Microsoft office remote pc mac control. Its availability has been pulled shortly before the release of Outlook 2000. As its release was outside the normal release cycle of the Office suites (to which the version numbers have been tied), the version number of Outlook 98 could not be a full version higher than Outlook 97.

No version 13.0

At the MVP Summit in 2009, Steve Ballmer admitted (to little surprise) that there won’t be a version 13.0 for any of the Office applications because of “plain old superstition”. However, he also said that there is no “company policy for superstition” and that other product groups may release a 13.0 version of their product in the future. Obviously this superstition isn’t going to be localized for other markets where they would fear the number 14.

Most of the time, saving a file in Word 2011 is a very simple task. But at times, you may want to limit access to a particular file. Or maybe you want to save an Office 2011 document so that it’s compatible with older versions of Word. The Word Save As options can accommodate these. Move word document to desktop. Save a Word document as a template. To update your template, open the file, make the changes you want, and then save the template. In Microsoft Word, you can create a template by saving a document as a.dotx file,.dot file, or a.dotm fie (a.dotm file type allows you to enable macros in the file). If you need to share a file with someone who does not have Office for Mac or who has an older version, you can save your document in a file format that a different or older application can read. You can also export a document as a PDF file or an HTML file, among other choices. On the File menu, click Save As.

Other current uses of the Outlook brand

Outlook on the Web is the Web-based e-mail interface of Microsoft Exchange Server. Initially it was called Exchange Web Connect but soon replaced with Outlook Web Access. In Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 it is called Outlook Web App and was renamed to Outlook on the Web with Exchange 2016. As it is a part of Exchange, the Outlook Team doesn’t develop it. However, the release cycle of Exchange is synchronous to the Office Suite and shares the same version number since Office 2010.

Since Office for Mac 2011, Outlook replaced Entourage but has a completely different development team (they are even located in a different State!) and originally another development cycle. While it does share the same version number, originally, Office for the Mac is released 1 year after its Windows counterpart. This is no longer the case since Office 2019.

In August 2012, it was been announced that Outlook.com would replace Hotmail. While Outlook.com takes over some design elements of Outlook 2013 and OWA 2013, this was also managed by a completely different team. Taking Outlook.com into production is part of the “Wave 15” project which again matches the version number of the Office releases. As of mid-2017, all Outlook.com mailboxes are hosted by the Office 365 platform and is very similar in look and feel to the corporate Outlook on the Web experience as part of Exchange Online. For various new end-user features and changes, Outlook.com often is used as a test-bed for the corporate version.

Office 365 ProPlus, the cloud-connected version of Office, delivers the most productive and most secure Office experience—with the lowest total cost of ownership for deployment and management. However, for customers who aren’t ready for the cloud, Office 2019 provides new features and updates to the on-premises apps for both users and IT professionals. Like Windows Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases, Office 2019 provides a set of valuable enhancements for customers who can’t be cloud-connected or receive regular updates.

The new enhancements in Office 2019 are a subset of a long list of features that have been added to Office 365 ProPlus over the last three years. Office 2019 is a one-time release and won’t receive future feature updates. However, we’ll continue to add new features to Office 365 ProPlus monthly, including innovations in collaboration, artificial intelligence (AI), security, and more.

Office 2019 delivers features across apps to help users create amazing content in less time. In PowerPoint 2019, you can create cinematic presentations with new features like Morph and Zoom. And improved inking features across the apps in Windows—like the roaming pencil case, pressure sensitivity, and tilt effects—allow you to naturally create documents.

Excel 2019 adds powerful new data analysis features, including new formulas and charts and enhancements to PowerPivot.

Word 2019 and Outlook 2019 help you focus on what matters most. Learning Tools, like Read Aloud and Text Spacing, make it easier to engage with your content. Focus Mode blocks out distractions and puts your content front and center. And Focused Inbox moves less important emails out of the way—so you can get straight to taking care of business. For a longer list of the new features in Office 2019, see our FAQs.

Office 2019 also includes new IT value for enhanced security and streamlined administration. We introduced Click-to-Run (C2R), a modern deployment technology, in Office 2013, and it’s now used to deploy and update Office across hundreds of millions of devices worldwide. With Office 2019, we’re moving the on-premises versions of Office to C2R to reduce costs and improve security. The advantages of C2R include predictable monthly security updates, up-to-date apps on installation, reduced network consumption through Windows 10 download optimization technology, and an easy upgrade path to Office 365 ProPlus. C2R offers the same enterprise-focused management capabilities as Microsoft Installer (MSI) based products and will also support an in-place upgrade when you move to Office 2019 from older MSI-based products. To learn more, refer to the Office 2019 Click-to-Run FAQ.

The 2019 release of Office products also includes updates to our servers, and in the coming weeks, we will release Exchange Server 2019, Skype for Business Server 2019, SharePoint Server 2019, and Project Server 2019.

Office 2019 is a valuable update for customers who aren’t yet ready for the cloud. And each time we release a new on-premises version of Office, customers ask us if this will be our last. We’re pleased to confirm that we’re committed to another on-premises release in the future. While the cloud offers real benefits in productivity, security, and total cost of ownership, we recognize that each customer is at a different point in their adoption of cloud services. We see the on-premises version of Office as an important part of our commitment to give customers the flexibility they need to move to the cloud at their own pace.
